Research studies of Abacus training
Recent studies have shown that the abacus method of mental calculation is effective in the development of the right brain. The recent development of high-tech machinery has helped to provide tangible research data.
Abacus MAP curriculum is developed in the UK by a team of School teachers and Abacus Instructors who are successfully teaching Abacus Mental Arithmetic Programme for a number of years. The team has a wealth of abacus teaching experience.
Abacus MAP technique is superior to traditional Chinese or Japanese method in which abacus learners use only one hand and 2 fingers.
Abacus MAP learners use both the right and left hands and 4 fingers to manipulate beads which in turn facilitates the balanced development of left and right brain to boost up the childrens’ calculation, accuracy, reaction-speed, image-memory, motor skills (reflex) and visualisation-power.
Nature of the course: An active numerical and image processing training for our brain using the tool Abacus.
Abacus learners place numbers on the abacus image in their head as they mentally calculate with the abacus method.
Forming and counting Numbers on abacus:
Parts of Abacus: frame, beam, unit point, rods, lower beads and upper beads.
Each rod has 1 upper bead and 4 lower beads.
The abacus gets a value only when bead / beads touch the beam.
The value of one upper bead is 5.
The value of each lower bead is 1.
The minimum value in a rod is 1 & the maximum value in a rod is 9.
When the beads are moved towards the beam, the value increases and vice versa
Abacus MAP recommends the age group for this training to be 5-12 years as the optimum enhancement of the brain and its development occur during this period.
We have 2 different approaches as a guide line:
- For kids who start the programme children who are in Reception to Year 2 in their school.
- For kids from Year 2 and above
